Troubled Water - Description

Water is largely taken for granted by consumers but it’s becoming “blue gold” in the 21st century. Troubled Water examines the threats to public water systems and watersheds using the East Coast of Vancouver Island as a case study. Privatization, public private partnerships (P3’s), privately owned community watersheds, vulnerable aquifers, ground water contamination and international trade agreements all undermine the safety and security of public water systems, public ownership and the fundamental human right to access clean drinking water.

Profiling a variety of water sources that represent typical water systems across North America, Troubled Water uncovers the common threats to these systems. The film highlights some good examples of watershed stewardship and encourages viewers to work toward maintaining water as a public trust in their own communities.

These different types of water sources and the various threats they face are representative of many other watersheds in North America and around the world. Examples of successes and what communities can strive for including the Blue Communities project are also highlighted.

Troubled Water is a 37 minute documentary that examines a variety of public drinking watersheds on Vancouver Island and some of the threats posed to them by industrial, commercial, agricultural and residential activity. While the examples are all set on Vancouver island these same problems can be seen in drinking watersheds around the world. In addition to the threat of contamination and over-use of water there is also the looming threat of privatization of water sources and infrastructure. The film includes examples of good management of public water sources.

Troubled Water will be released in January 2013. You can help with the final fundraising effort for this film by making a donation. If you contribute $50 or more your contribution will be recognized in the credits of the film and you will get a DVD copy when the film is released.

It’s time to demand a full legislative ban on all oil tankers on Canada’s west coast.

Pamela Anderson says No Tanks

Pamela and I both grew up in the same small town on Vancouver Island and learned to swim at the same beach. We didn’t know each other as children but we both share the same concern that future generations should have the same opportunities we had as children to enjoy all that nature has to offer on this beautiful coast.

No Tanks Vancouver - Oil Tanker ban BC

This second 2 minute video No Tanks Vancouver - Oil Tanker ban BC explains in more detail how Vancouver quietly became the west coast tar sands shipping port. It explains how dangerous this shipping route is and the implication of a spill (which is a matter of when not if). Exporting crude oil is not only environmentally hazardous it also exports valuable jobs and undermines Canadian energy security.

As is my usual mode of operation, this is a volunteer effort. If you would like to contribute to this effort please donate at www.manlymedia.com My next short videos will be about CETA the Canada European Comprehensive Economic Trade Agreement. Here’s a sample video featuring CEP president Dave Coles speaking about CETA in Ottawa.
