It’s time to demand a full legislative ban on all oil tankers on Canada’s west coast.

Pamela Anderson says No Tanks

Pamela and I both grew up in the same small town on Vancouver Island and learned to swim at the same beach. We didn’t know each other as children but we both share the same concern that future generations should have the same opportunities we had as children to enjoy all that nature has to offer on this beautiful coast.

No Tanks Vancouver - Oil Tanker ban BC

This second 2 minute video No Tanks Vancouver - Oil Tanker ban BC explains in more detail how Vancouver quietly became the west coast tar sands shipping port. It explains how dangerous this shipping route is and the implication of a spill (which is a matter of when not if). Exporting crude oil is not only environmentally hazardous it also exports valuable jobs and undermines Canadian energy security.

As is my usual mode of operation, this is a volunteer effort. If you would like to contribute to this effort please donate at www.manlymedia.com My next short videos will be about CETA the Canada European Comprehensive Economic Trade Agreement.
98 Minutes, Released August 2010

Produced and Directed By: Paul Manly

Documentation of the live event, June 25th at Massey Hall in Toronto on the eve of the G20 Summit. Produced in association with Smart Change, the Council of Canadians and the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers union.

This event was documented and edited for the Smart Change - Cable Access Coalition project. The Cable Access Coalition encourages individuals and organizations across Canada to regain access to their ‘community access’ cable stations. The Shout Out for Global Justice was produced to create content to help people realize how easy it is to have access to this community broadcast outlet by giving them a program they could submit. The Shout for Global Justice features powerful speakers who outline the reasons why all citizens should oppose the G20 and it’s elitist corporate agenda. This is information that is valuable to all Canadians.

We are producing a second program from the G20 which consists of short news segments and reflections on the People Summit, the G20, the protests and the attack on civil liberties that saw the largest mass arrest in Canadian history. It features footage and stories produced by The Real News network, the Toronto Video Activist collective, Rabble.tv, the Vancouver Media Coop, Velcrow Ripper and Press for Truth.

Order a personal home use or community cable broadcast copy of the Shout Out for Global Justice DVD.
Film Description

‘You, Me, and the SPP: Trading Democracy for Corporate Rule’

What do secrecy, police provocateurs, an assault on democracy and infringements on citizens’ rights have in common? The Security Prosperity Partnership.

‘You, Me, and the S.P.P: Trading Democracy for Corporate Rule’ is a feature length documentary which exposes the latest manifestation of a corporatist agenda that is undermining the democratic authority of the citizens of North America. Two processes, the Security Prosperity Partnership (SPP) and the Trade Investment Labour Mobility Agreement (TILMA) are rapidly eroding and eliminating standards, civil liberties, regulatory systems and institutions put in place over generations through the democratic process. Proponents of the SPP and TILMA say that they are needed to keep trade flowing, opponents say these agreements not only undermine the democratic authority of citizens they threaten the sovereignty of the three nations through the integration of military, security structures and regulatory regimes.

Here are a few quotes from the film.

“… after the shock of Sept 11 … that crisis was expertly manipulated by our political leaders to push through a range of policies they actually had wanted to push through before Sept 11, but didn’t have the political conditions that made that possible.”
Naomi Klein, Canadian award-winning journalist, author

“…if we go along with the Americans on their military, on their human rights, on their Patriot Act, on immigration and refugee policy, on energy, on all kinds of regulations over pesticides or whatever, then they will allow us access to their markets.”
Gordon Laxer, Director, The Parkland Institute, Alberta

“… what the SPP really represents is a parallel government, so that the important decisions are either made outside of parliament and outside of legislatures or they make it impossible for those kinds of decisions to be made in those legislative bodies, so that democracy is slowly being gutted.”
Murray Dobbin, Canadian author, journalist

“The ultimate goal, quite obviously, is to create such tight integration that effectively we only have one North American political, security, military and economic place - that there really are no differentials between this country and the country next door.”
Michael Byers, Canada Research Chair, Global Politics and International Law, UBC

“The SPP is a dumbing down, a reducing of quality of life, a reducing of standards, and there is absolutely no indication in any of the documents we’ve been able to obtain through hard pushing through access to information, and through diligent work, not a single indication that we’re looking for a higher standard anywhere.”
Peter Julian, NDP International Trade Critic

About the Film

Manly starts the film with random interviews on the street with two questions “Have your heard about the SPP, the Security Prosperity Partnership?” and “Have you heard about TILMA the Trade Investment Labour Mobility Agreement?” None of the people he asks have heard anything about these two agreements and so his next question is why not? Unable to obtain interviews with any government ministers responsible for these agreements or with any other proponents, Manly sets out to find out what all the silence is about and what these agreements will mean to the citizens of Canada.

‘You, Me, and the S.P.P: Trading Democracy for Corporate Rule‘ is a feature length documentary which exposes the corporatist agenda that is currently undermining the democratic authority of the citizens of North America. Two processes, the Security Prosperity Partnership (SPP) and the Trade Investment Labour Mobility Agreement (TILMA) are rapidly eroding and eliminating standards, civil liberties, regulatory systems and institutions put in place over generations through the democratic process.

Told through interviews with various experts who oppose this agenda and through the experiences of ordinary citizens who are feeling the effects of its implementation ‘You, Me and the SPP’ lays out the breadth and depth of the SPP and TILMA and outlines what we as citizens can do to stop it.

Manly decided to premiere the film in Nanaimo first, because the local community has provided him with the bulk of the financial and moral support needed to complete this project. He said he could not and would not have produced this film without the amazing support he received here.

This premiere screening is sponsored by the Human Rights and International Solidarity Committee of the VIU Faculty Association, the VIU Students Union and the Nanaimo Global Film Festival. Admission is by donation, all proceeds will go towards the promotional budget to help get this film out to as wide an audience as possible. There will be a special preview screening for VIU students on February 5th in the afternoon in 356/109, 2:30-4:30pm.

The preview version of ‘You, Me and the SPP’ is also scheduled to screen at the World Community Film Festival in Courtenay on February 7th and in Vancouver on February 14th It will also screen in Nanaimo again at the Nanaimo Global Film Festival on the weekend of March 20th.

In late spring I started working on a documentary about TILMA (the Trade Investment Labour Mobility Agreement) and the SPP (the Security Prosperity Partnership). The documentary focuses on how these trade deals are being negotiated in secret under the guidance of the largest corporations in North America but without involvement from civil society, the labour and environmental movement, first nations or opposition parties. These agreements are being conducted without legislative or parliamentary oversight or debate and are being implemented through a regulatory process instead.

The SPP and TILMA threaten our democratic process in Canada, they are a race to the bottom in terms of harmonizing standards and deregulating corporate activity in this country, the USA and Mexico. I urge you to find out more by reading some of the excellent material available at the Council of Canadians national website www.canadians.org

By now many of you may be aware of the Youtube video I posted after Dave Coles of the Communications Energy and Paperworkers union confronted Agent Provocateurs at the SPP protest in Montebello.
You can see all the videos I posted on Youtube.com on the CanadiansNanaimo channel. If you would like to help us produce this important documentary please visit Trading Democracy for Corporate Rule and make a contribution.

Yours in the never ending struggle for Peace and democracy.

The newest documentary by Manly Media, Sombrio tells the story about the eviction of a diverse community of surfers and squatters that existed on the West Coast of Vancouver Island for more than thirty years.

“If we have a right to life we have a right to living space… I wasn’t born with dollars in my pocket. I shouldn’t have to chase the big buck all my life just for a place to live.” Barbara Oke.

“Wonderful work. Sombrio needs to be seen by a whole lot of people. ” CBC Radio Paul Vasey - On the Island.
